Aeschylus was born near Athens around 525 BCE and is generally regarded as the earliest of the three great tragedians of ancient Greece, preceding Sophocles and Euripides. He lived during a period of political transformation and military conflict and is believed to have fought in the Persian Wars, including the Battle of Marathon. His experiences of war, religion, civic duty, and social change deeply shaped his drama. Aeschylus is credited with transforming Greek tragedy by expanding the role of individual actors and reducing the dominance of the chorus, allowing for more complex dialogue and dramatic conflict. Ancient sources attributed approximately seventy to ninety plays to him, though only seven survive complete. These include The Persians, Prometheus Bound, Seven Against Thebes, The Suppliants, and the three plays of the Oresteia. The Oresteia, first performed in 458 BCE, is Aeschylus's greatest surviving achievement and the only complete trilogy preserved from ancient Greek theater. Through the history of the House of Atreus, he examined revenge, inherited guilt, divine authority, political order, and the replacement of blood vengeance by civic justice. Aeschylus died around 456 BCE, but his influence on drama, poetry, and Western ideas of tragedy has endured for more than two thousand years.
