Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English novelist whose works helped establish the Gothic novel as a major literary form. Known for her atmospheric descriptions, suspenseful plots, and psychological exploration of fear, Radcliffe became one of the most widely read writers of the late eighteenth century. Her novels-including The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Romance of the Forest, and The Italian-influenced later Gothic and Romantic literature and remain central works in the history of the genre.
