Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) was an American historian, educator, and author widely known as the "Father of Black History. " He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and established what later became Black History Month. Through his scholarship and advocacy, Woodson worked to promote a fuller understanding of African American history and its central place in the broader history of the United States.
