Cillian Burke-Moriarty was raised in County Clare within earshot of the Cliffs of Moher, where a childhood fascination with hillforts and hoard finds grew into a lasting preoccupation with how ancient peoples on the move - Celtic, Punic, and otherwise - collided, traded, and occasionally destroyed one another. He has spent years tracing the scattered footprint of Gaulish mercenaries across the Hellenistic and Punic Mediterranean, drawn particularly to the moments where language, rather than the sword, decided a battle's outcome. Cillian approaches ancient history the way a genealogist approaches a family plot: patiently, and with an instinct for the overlooked figure standing just outside the frame. This is his latest work of narrative nonfiction exploring the mercenary world of the ancient Mediterranean.
