The author shares their experiences growing up in a house without running water or indoor plumbing, relying on a back porch faucet for water. Their school in Rye, Texas, had only three teachers for six grades, with the principal also teaching the 5th and 6th grades. To support themselves, the author worked at a sawmill and later rented a room in Beaumont, Texas. Despite their efforts, they struggled financially, taking multiple jobs, including a soda dispenser and maintenance worker at Gulf States Utilities. They also reminisced about their sister buying them a worn 1937 Chevy Coupe. The author recounts a memorable date with a girl from a wealthier background, where they dined at a carhop while witnessing the butchering of chickens nearby. Despite their different social classes, the relationship continued without addressing their disparities. When the author introduced his girlfriend, Sherry, to his family, she adapted well to their humble home and even enjoyed a squirrel hunt with the family. After two years of dating, they are soon to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary.
