Dugald Barr was born in Glasgow and grew up in the west of Scotland. Educated at Fettes College, he went up to Christ Church, Oxford, with the top scholarship, to read Greats. There he became Hon. Secretary of the PGW Society and was also Master of the Beagles. He stroked the Christ Church Second VIII. After Oxford he lived in London all his life, but for short spells in New York and Tokyo. He was a stockbroker and investment analyst specialising in Japan, then an emerging market for foreign investors, with Vickers, da Costa & Co. and James Capel & Co. , the largest firm of London stockbrokers at the time, where he became a Partner. After retiring from the City he became a Director of FreshFries/Tege SA in Geneva. His principal interests were sailing (a Yachtmaster), travel, art, architecture, photography, driving his Ferraris, flying light aircraft (Chipmunk, Tiger Moth), music, reading and painting. He travelled extensively around the globe both for business and leisure, taking innumerable photographs. His paintings, mostly of landscapes of the west coast of Scotland where he had a house at Machrihanish in Kintyre, of Suffolk at his wife's house by the River Stour, and of France where he toured in his car each autumn, were exhibited at the Osborne Studio Gallery in Belgravia, London. He was putting together that exhibition when he died unexpectedly of neutropenic sepsis on 3rd September 2023.
