Autor/-in: Edward John Eyre
Edward John Eyre (1815-1901), britischer Forschungsreisender, ist vor allem für seinen Einsatz für die Aborigines bekannt. 1836 gelingt es ihm als erster Westeuropäer über den Landweg die Kolonie South Australia zu erreichen. 1839 erreicht er auf einer weiteren Expedition in den Norden Australiens die Flinderskette und die später nach ihm benannte Eyre-Halbinsel. 1840/41 leitet er eine Expedition zur Westküste. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England werden Eyre diverse Gouverneurs-Posten zuteil. Eyre starb 1901 im Südwesten Englands.
