Autor/-in: George Bird Grinnell

George Bird Grinnell was an American naturalist, historian, writer, ethnographer, and conservationist. Born in Brooklyn in 1849, he studied zoology and participated in expeditions across the American West before becoming editor of Forest and Stream. His experiences brought him into sustained contact with Native nations of the Plains, particularly the Blackfoot, Cheyenne, and Pawnee, whose histories and traditions became central subjects of his writing. Grinnell was also a major figure in the early American conservation movement. He advocated for the protection of wildlife, helped organize efforts to preserve the American bison, and played an influential role in the creation and protection of public lands. His other works include Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk-Tales, The Cheyenne Indians, and The Story of the Indian. Although his ethnographic writing reflects the perspective and limitations of his era, the material he recorded remains significant to the study of Native American history and the cultures of the Great Plains.
