A lifelong enthusiast of the early American republic, he is especially drawn to moments when ordinary people, farmers, tradesmen, and forgotten local leaders, found themselves shaping events that official history preferred to credit to statesmen alone. He approaches his subjects with a storyteller's instinct for character and a researcher's patience for the archive, believing that the clearest history is written from the ground up rather than the capitol down. When not writing, Kelly can usually be found walking coastal paths with a notebook, turning over the next century's worth of forgotten uprisings, betrayed promises, and the ordinary people who refused to accept them quietly.
