Jorge Prieto, M. D (1918-2001) was an immigrant physician who became a household name by treating Chicago's Mexican immigrants in the 1950s and pioneering Cook County's practice of locating clinics in immigrants' neighborhoods. He received his degree in medicine from the Universidad Nacional de Mexico in 1949. He joined Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers on their California march for a contract in 1966 and was active in the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago Cardinal's Committee for the Spanish Speaking. Among his many honors and responsibilities he has been Consultant on Family Life to the National Bishops Committee for the Spanish Speaking, a member of the Migrant Labor Advisory Committee for the state of Illinois, and consultant to the U. S. Senate sub-committee on Aging from 1970-1975.
