Martin McGurran grew up in County Donegal, where the layered history of the Atlantic fringe - Roman roads ending just short of the Irish coast, the long echoes of empire in language and landscape - made the ancient world feel less distant than it perhaps should. He has spent his working life reading widely in the history of the Roman empire and the provincial world it made and unmade across western Europe. His particular interest is in the provinces: in what it meant to be Roman without being Italian, to carry a Roman name inherited from a conqueror, to live inside a civilization that shaped you while extracting from you simultaneously. He writes for the reader who wants the scholarship and the story in equal measure.
