Miguel O'Hanrahan was raised in County Clare, where a childhood spent among ruined tower houses and stories of the Wild Geese first drew him toward the long, tangled history of Europe's frontiers - the places where empires meet and neither side quite wins. He has spent years absorbed in the history of the late medieval Balkans and the Ottoman world, drawn especially to the moments when chivalric idealism collided with institutions built for something colder and more effective. When he isn't reading fourteenth-century chronicles late into the night, he can usually be found walking the Burren or arguing, with more passion than the subject strictly warrants, about exactly where the Crusades actually ended.
