Morton Shanahan grew up in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland, in a household where the injustices of history were taken seriously and the obligation to name them plainly was treated as a moral rather than a merely intellectual matter. He has spent many years researching the intersection of institutional power, legal accountability, and the lives of people who fall outside the protections that institutions claim to provide. The Mitsero case reached him through the coverage of the recovery operations and refused to let go: a case in which seven people were killed, thirty-one months passed without investigation, and the formal mechanisms of accountability proved inadequate to the scale of the failure. He lives between Ireland and Southern Europe and writes about the cases the world notices too late.
