Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an Italian diplomat, political philosopher, and writer who served the Florentine Republic during the Renaissance. After the fall of the republic he devoted himself to writing works on politics and history, the most famous of which is The Prince. His analysis of political power and leadership has made him one of the most influential-and often controversial-thinkers in Western political thought.
