Olive Tilford Dargan (1869-1968) is best remembered today for her poetry and travel writing, but her literary life was marked by a remarkable duality. Writing as Fielding Burke, she explored social, political, and labor issues in early twentieth-century America, producing novels that confronted class, gender, and regional identity with unflinching realism. As Dargan herself, she produced works of quieter intimacy, observing landscape, culture, and the creatures that inhabit it with a poet's eye.
