Seamus McRoom writes narrative nonfiction from a family farm in County Clare, where an early fascination with the Wild Geese and Ireland's own long history of rebellion against colonial power first drew him toward the wider story of resistance across the Atlantic world. A self-taught historian with a particular interest in the corporate and commercial architecture of European colonialism, he has spent years researching the Dutch Guianas, drawn by the striking and underexamined parallel between Ireland's own colonial experience and the sovereign ambitions of enslaved rebels three thousand miles across the ocean. The Sovereign Struggle is his first full-length study of the Berbice Rebellion, and he hopes it restores Cuffy's extraordinary and largely forgotten achievement to the wider historical attention it has long deserved.
