Stanley Price was born in London of Irish parents on 12th August 1931. After National Service he went up to Cambridge, where he read History. In 1956 he emigrated to America and spent four years working as a reporter on Life magazine. He returned to London and his first novel, Crusading for Kronk, was published in 1961. This was quickly followed by The Biggest Picture, Just for the Record and A World of Difference. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he wrote, but mostly re-wrote, screenplays, including Arabesque (1965), with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren, and Gold (1974). As a playwright, Stanley Price had two West End successes: Moving (1982) with Penelope Keith and Miranda Richardson, and Why Me. (1985) with Richard Briers and Liz Smith. He also wrote plays for television: Close Relations and Genghis Cohn, both for BBC2, respectively won the Reims International Television Festival's Best Screenplay award in 1990, and its Jury Prize for Best Film in 1995. In his last years Stanley Price published a memoir, Somewhere to Hang my Hat, and in 2012, with son Munro Price, The Road to Apocalypse: the Extraordinary Journey of Lewis Way. James Joyce and Italo Svevo appeared in 2016. Stanley Price died on 28th February 2019.
