Autor/-in: Thomasina Aiken

Thomasina Aiken grew up in County Clare, where evenings spent listening to her grandfather's stories of Ireland's own long history of resistance to occupying powers first kindled her fascination with the recurring, cross-cultural struggle between empires and the peoples who refuse to submit to them. She studied ancient Mediterranean history independently for years before turning to writing full time, drawn again and again to the moments when a smaller, poorer, seemingly outmatched people managed to make a great power reckon with them on something approaching equal terms. She is especially preoccupied with the gap between how empires remember their own conduct and what the historical record actually shows, a tension she finds nowhere more vivid than in the story of Viriathus.
