William Congreve (1670-1729) was one of the most distinguished dramatists of the English Restoration. Born in Yorkshire and educated in Ireland, Congreve quickly gained fame in London for his comedies of wit and social observation. His major plays-including Love for Love and The Way of the World-are celebrated for their sparkling dialogue and refined portrayal of the manners of late seventeenth-century society. Though his dramatic career was relatively brief, Congreve's works remain among the most admired comedies in the English theatrical tradition.
