Beschreibung
Somerset Kinsley returns to her late grandmother's isolated house intending to empty its rooms, sell the surrounding land, and disconnect the obsolete telephone still fastened to the kitchen wall. Then the landline rings. Beneath every caller's ordinary voice, Somerset hears another-sometimes younger, sometimes older, sometimes frightened, dying, or confessing. The echoes reveal truths the speakers have buried so deeply that even they may no longer recognize them. Somerset blames grief, exhaustion, and the memories woven through the old house. But when an echo describes a woman's murder hours before her body is discovered, the impossible becomes evidence. Detective Archer Worthington is patient, persuasive, and strangely willing to believe her. As he draws Somerset into the investigation, the calls begin exposing hidden affairs, abandoned promises, and crimes the town has spent decades forgetting. Soon, however, the voices stop merely predicting the murders. They begin telling Somerset where to go. What to find. And whom not to trust. Someone knows what she hears when the telephone rings. Someone has been waiting for her to answer. And with every call, Somerset is pulled deeper into a killer's carefully constructed story-one in which her grandmother may have played the first part and Somerset has already been chosen to play the last. Every voice carries a secret. Some are confessed only after it is too late.
