Beschreibung
Five thousand years of stargazing have brought humanity to a universe where visible matter accounts for just five percent of what exists. This is that story. For readers who have always suspected that the popular history of astronomy is missing something, this book is the complete account. Whether you have read popular cosmology and felt that the human and institutional dimensions were glossed over, or studied the science and found the history compressed into a series of heroic discoveries, this book treats both the science and the history with equal rigour and equal narrative care. Astronomy is not the story of a series of lone geniuses correcting the errors of the past. It is a five-thousand-year argument across civilisations, languages, institutions, and centuries, carried forward by Babylonian scribes and Islamic observatory directors and Harvard "computers" paid twenty-five cents an hour and doctoral students whose supervisors received the prizes their work principally earned. This book tells that full story. What You Will LearnWhy the geocentric model was not ignorance but a coherent, mathematically sophisticated system that made accurate predictions for over a millennium. How the Copernican revolution actually unfolded: contested, incremental, and dependent on two generations of mathematical work after Copernicus himself. How spectroscopy transformed astronomy from a science of positions and motions into a science of physical composition, revealing what stars are made of. What the Great Debate of 1920 was actually about and why Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis were both partially right. Why Georges Lemaitre's prior contribution to the discovery of the expanding universe was erased from the English translation of his own paper, and what the IAU did about it in 2012. What dark matter and dark energy actually are in the honest sense: what the evidence establishes, what it does not, and why the Lambda-CDM model's architects regard it as the best available approximation rather than the final answer. How gravitational wave detection in 2015 opened a genuinely new observational window on the cosmos rather than simply confirming what was already known. How Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and Vera Rubin shaped the field in ways the profession was systematically slow to recognise. Written as a narrative history of science for general educated readers, this book takes the science seriously without requiring mathematical background, and treats the development of astronomical ideas as itself one of the most interesting things about them. It is the history of astronomy told without the myths, without the erasures, and without the pretence that the current cosmological model is the final picture.
