This study synthesizes selected findings from research conducted in tropical wetlands in Panama and in marshland regions of Paraguay, with the aim of evaluating their applicability to agricultural systems in the Brazilian Pantanal. The field experiments focused on integrated soil fertility management, nutrient dynamics under high-moisture conditions, and the sustainability of agricultural production in environments with limited drainage. The results highlight the importance of the physical balance of the soil (three-phase distribution: solid, liquid, and gas) and the integration of practices adapted to conditions of periodic flooding. In this context, it is recommended to grow rain-fed rice in the high-moisture region and irrigated rice near large rivers, taking into account the transport of harvested rice by boat to markets on the plains. Furthermore, it is very important to evaluate wetland grass species in order to increase milk production for dairy cattle in the wetland region and to cultivate improved grass species, such as Brachiaria, on the hills.
