The City Beneath Series - Book One. For nine thousand years, the underground city of Evanus has survived beneath the human world-a sanctuary built for demons, exiles and supernatural bloodlines condemned by Heaven. Its people live beneath an artificial sky, protected by seven prophetic flames and the ancient Gates of Hades. But when the Black Bell rings for the first time in three thousand years, those gates open without a keeper. Something has escaped. Zephira Very, a relentless warrior bonded to Vharok-a legendary hellhound with three hearts-is ordered to uncover the truth. Her search reveals celestial assassins inside Evanus, forbidden passages leading to Heaven and a prophecy the Seven Thrones have deliberately erased. At its center stands the Queen Without a Crown: a woman of celestial and demonic blood destined either to unite the divided supernatural realms-or destroy creation itself. When the ruling Thrones conceal the invasion and condemn an innocent prince, Zephira is forced into an uneasy alliance with four outcasts: Malach Voss, an exiled royal marked for execution; Nysera Ashborne, a seer who sacrifices a memory for every future she witnesses; Korven Draziel, a disgraced gatekeeper whose daughter is imprisoned in Heaven; and Sable Noctis, a shapeshifter who has worn so many identities that she no longer remembers her own. Together they become the Five. Their investigation carries them from the buried districts of Evanus to the shores of Lake Guntersville, where the supernatural and human worlds collide. There, Zephira meets Daniel Mercer, a seemingly ordinary young man whose missing mother, dormant powers and forbidden bloodline connect him to the celestial war. As Heaven's hunters close in, the Veil protecting humanity begins to fail, ancient rulers prepare their armies, and refugees from every supernatural race seek sanctuary beneath the city. Angels offer salvation through surrender. Kings choose survival over justice. Prophecies reveal only enough truth to turn allies against one another. And Zephira's own awakening may be the greatest danger of all. As the year draws to its end, the Seven Thrones prepare to sacrifice everyone Heaven has marked for extermination. Zephira and the Five must decide whether they will defend the laws of Evanus-or the purpose for which the city was truly created. Because the seven flames are beginning to change. When the first one dies, the countdown to eternity's end will begin. Before the First Flame is the opening installment of The City Beneath, a sweeping dark-fantasy saga of forbidden bloodlines, celestial conspiracies, divided kingdoms and the condemned souls who refuse to kneel.
