Bettina Scholz: Ost / West und das südliche Orakel

Deutsch. Fantasy. Bettina Scholz malt Bilder, die wie alchemistische Farbschüttungen wirken, und so sehen viele Betrachterinnen darin gerne auch apokalyptische Welten, wie Max Dax schreibt, der die Künstlerin im Sommer 2019 für »HYPER. « in die Deichtorhallen eingeladen hatte. Diese Assoziation verwundert nicht, denn ihre kräftig leuchtenden Bilder, die sie auf und hinter Glas malt, entstehen in einer Auseinandersetzung mit sakraler Kirchenkunst, gotischer Buchmalerei oder der Bild- und Musikwelt zeitgenössischer Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Formate. Es gibt aber auch konkrete Bezüge zu Filmen wie etwa »Blade Runner« von Ridley Scott, den »Dune«-Filmen nach dem »Wüstenplanet« des amerikanischen Schriftstellers Frank Herbert, den Filmen »Solaris« oder »Stalker« des russischen Regisseurs Andrej Tarkowsky und deren Filmmusik von Edvard Artemiev oder auch zum Sound des Techno-Labels Underground Resistance. Bettina Scholz’ Malerei, die sie neben Acrylglas auch auf Holz oder Leinwand realisiert, sowie ihre Zeichnungen, Objekte und Installationen spiegeln nicht zuletzt die visuellen Einflüsse ihrer Kindheit in der ehemaligen DDR wider. Hier war die Liebe zu Märchenbüchern, zum Jugendstil des Golden Age of Illustration, zu den reich verzierten osteuropäischen Bilderbuchausgaben oder zu der ins Land geschmuggelten, bunt gedruckten und mit Zeichnungen versehenen Ausgabe des Klassikers »Momo« von Michael Ende entstanden. Für Bettina Scholz haben Produkte der Fantasie enormem Einfluss auf das, was wir Realität nennen: »Das Fantastische, das Erfundene hat im künstlerischen Kontext für mich nichts mit Weltflucht oder Verharmlosung zu tun, sondern kann im Gegenteil das eigenständige Denken anregen und sogar rebellisches Potenzial entwickeln. « Mit dem Stillstand der 2020er Jahre hatte sie zudem eine Reihe mit Skizzenbüchern begonnen, die nun schon ca. 500 Zeichnungen und Collagen enthalten; sie werden hier im Band erstmals ausschnittweise vorgestellt. Die Monografie zeigt Bilder und Ausstellungsansichten der letzten zehn Jahre und wird begleitet von experimentellen, autobiografischen Essays, die Einblicke in die Entstehung der Bilder und in die Vorstellungswelt der Künstlerin geben. Many viewers tend to see apocalyptic worlds in them, according to Max Dax, who invited the artist to the Deichtorhallen for »HYPER. « in the summer of 2019. This notion is hardly surprising, given that her vibrantly luminous pictures, painted on and behind glass, are the result of an exploration of sacred church art, Gothic book illumination, and the visual and musical world of contem- porary fantasy and science fiction formats. Though there are also quite specific references to films such as Ridley Scott’s »Blade Runner«, the »Dune« films based on the epic novels by American writer Frank Herbert, Andrei Tarkovsky’s films »Solaris« and »Stalker« with their film music by Edvard Artemiev, as well as to the sound of the techno label Underground Resistance. Bettina Scholz works on acrylic glass, as well as on wood or canvas, and her drawings, objects, and installations reflect not least the visual influences of her childhood in the former GDR. Her love of fairy tale books emerged there, of the Jugendstil style of the golden age of illustration, and her appreciation of the richly decorated Eastern European picture book editions or the colorfully printed edition of Michael Ende’s classic »Momo«, complete with drawings, that was smuggled into the country. For Bettina Scholz, products of the imagination have an enormous influence on what we call reality: »I don’t see the fantastic, the invented in an artistic context as having anything to do with escapism or trivialization; on the contrary, it can inspire independent thinking and even develop rebellious potential. « During the period of stagnation during the 2020s, she furthermore began working on a series of sketchbooks containing around 500 drawings and collages; excerpts from these are presented here for the first time. The monograph presents pictures and exhibition views from the last ten years and is accompanied by experimental, autobiographical essays that offer insights into the way the pictures were created as well as into the artist’s world of ideas.
