Beschreibung
Colombia holds more recorded bird species than any other country on Earth, nearly one in five of all birds alive today. That distinction comes from a geography almost too generous for its own good: three separate Andean mountain ranges, the world's highest coastal mountain range rising straight from the Caribbean Sea, one of the wettest rainforests on the planet, open seasonal grassland, and a full share of the Amazon basin itself. Birds of Colombia selects fifty of them and gives each the room a field guide never allows: how it finds a mate, defends a territory, raises its young, and fits into the landscape it calls home. Organized region by region, the book carries readers from the high altitude wetlands above Bogotá, through the isolated, endemism rich Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Caribbean coast, across the coffee country and glaciated peaks of the Central Cordillera, over the dry Cauca Valley into the dripping rainforest of the Chocó, out across the flooded plains of Los Llanos, and finally into the Colombian Amazon itself. Inside, you'll meet:. The Andean Condor, riding thermals above the páramo on a wingspan approaching 3. 3 meters. The Multicolored Tanager, a songbird the size of a sparrow wearing turquoise, orange, yellow, and black all at once. The Santa Marta Sabrewing and Blue-bearded Helmetcrest, two hummingbirds rediscovered after decades without a confirmed sighting, in a mountain range still yielding genuine scientific surprises. The Yellow-eared Parrot, pulled back from fewer than one hundred birds to a stable population through one of the clearest community led conservation success stories in the Americas. The Hoatzin, a leaf eating, fermenting oddity whose chicks are born with working claws on their wings, a living echo of the earliest feathered dinosaurs. The Harpy Eagle, apex predator of the Amazon canopy, powerful enough to lift prey nearly its own body weight. Written in a narrative, natural history style rather than the clipped shorthand of a field guide, and drawing on Colombia's rapidly expanding birdwatching infrastructure, a direct result of regions once closed by conflict now opening to research and ecotourism, this book is built for travelers planning a trip, birdwatchers checking off a bucket list, and armchair naturalists who simply want to know more about the birds behind the sightings. Fifty birds cannot capture the whole of what Colombia has to offer. They can offer a genuine introduction, one that turns a fleeting sighting into something worth remembering.
