Auftrag als Konzept »Wenn ich durchs Museum gehe, kann ich sagen, welches Bild nach Modell entstanden ist und welches nicht. « - Caroline von Grone hat einen scharfen und unbestechlichen Blick für Situationen und Porträts. 1991 war sie Meisterschülerin bei Klaus Rinke an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und hatte sich, ganz untypisch für jene Zeit, auf das Porträtmalen verlegt, entweder mit Modellen, die sie etwa in U-Bahnhöfen angesprochen hatte, oder mit Personen, die ein Porträt bei ihr bestellt hatten. Es ist eine ihrer Stärken, dass sie Beobachtungen »nicht erfindet«. Das geht mit einer Sehschärfe einher, die den BetrachterInnen einen großen Genuss beschert. Denn die Bilder offerieren ein ums andere Mal auch das Bild im Bild, etwa abstrakt aufgefasste Kachelwände, Bodenfliesen oder die Interieurs öffentlicher Orte wie Telefonzellen oder Fahrkartenautomaten. Immer wieder hat sie auch Häuser gemalt, etwa Häuser einer norddeutschen Siedlung, bevor sie dann abgerissen wurden. Gerade auch solche finalen Zustände haben sie interessiert - eine Art Gegenpol zur Fotografie etwa der Bechers. Immer Teil ihrer Praxis war für Caroline von Grone das Malen in der Öffentlichkeit, denn sonsten bekäme sie »die stilllebenhafte Präsenz in das Bild nicht rein, wenn ich das nach einem Foto versuchen würde«. En effet, ses tableaux dévoilent ainsi parfois aussi l’image dans l’image, sous la forme notamment de murs carrelés aux motifs abstraits, de sols dallés et de l’intérieur d’espaces publics comme des cabines téléphoniques ou distributeurs automatiques de billets de train. Elle a aussi peint à de multiples reprises des maisons, notamment celles de lotissements du Nord de l’Allemagne avant leur démolition. Ce sont ces situations finales qui l’intéressent - à l’antithèse de la photographie, par exemple celles des Becher. Sa pratique a toujours inclus celle de la peinture en public, sans laquelle elle serait incapable de « capter la présence de nature morte dans un tableau si j’essayais de le peindre d’après une photo ».
