Love is never just black and white. You would think that, when John Earley falls for Ernestine Jones, all would be well with the world. But this is America in June 1982, and John is white while Ernestine is Black. As the couple face antagonism from all sides, especially family, the twin spectres of Ernestine's old boyfriend and John's "girlfriend" from university rise up to threaten the happiness they are seeking.
