Beschreibung
is a scientific pub lication likely written in the early 20th century. This work focuses on the various ailments affecting horses' hooves, a crucial aspect for veteri narians and horse owners alike given the horse's dependence on sound feet for mobility and labor. The text aims to provide a comprehensive resource based on both the author's knowledge and the contributions of others, en compassing a range of anatomical and pathological studies. The opening of the text outlines the significance of understanding foot diseases in veterinary surgery, addressing common issues faced in horses, from neglected foot care in young colts to injuries sustained in different environments and the con sequences of improper shoeing. It emphasizes the hoof's fundamental role in the horse's overall health and usefulness, laying a foundation for the sub sequent chapters that delve into regional anatomy, physiology, and specific diseases. The author reveals that many complications can arise from insuffi cient knowledge in shoeing practices and stresses the importance of vigilant foot management to prevent various foot disorders. We head this section, Periostitis and Ostitis, for the reason that in actual practice it is rare for one of these affections to occur without the other. The periosteum and the bone are so intimately connected that it is difficult to conceive of disease of the one failing to communicate itself in some degree to the other. Pathologically, however, and for purposes of description, it is more convenient to describe separately the abnormal changes occurring in these two tissues. With the main phenomena of inflammation occurring elsewhere we pre sume our readers are aware. Briefly we may put it, that under the action of an irritant, either actual injury, chemical action, or septic infection, the healthy tissues around react in order to effect repair of the parts destroyed. Also that this reaction involves the distribution of a greater blood-supply to the part, with an abundant migration of leucocytes, and the outpouring of an inflammatory exudate, together with symptoms of heat, pain, redness, andswelling of the affected area.
