Beschreibung
Emperor Wu of Chen, Chen Baxian (503-559), courtesy name Xingguo, childhood name Fasheng, was born in Wuxing (present-day Changxing County, Zhejiang Province) with ancestral roots in Yingchuan (present-day Yuzhou City, Henan Province). He was a descendant of Chen Shi, who served as Grand Administrator of Taiping in the Eastern Han dynasty, and became the founding emperor of the Chen dynasty during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, reigning from 557 to 559. In his early years, Chen Baxian served as a messenger officer under Xiao Ying, the Marquis of Xinyu, and was highly regarded by his superior. In 544, when a rebellion broke out in Guangzhou and Xiao Ying was besieged, Chen Baxian lifted the siege in a single battle, drawing the attention of Emperor Wu of Liang. He later played a key role in suppressing the Hou Jing Rebellion and escorted Xiao Fangzhi, the ninth son of Emperor Yuan of Liang, to Jiankang to assume the throne. Chen Baxian took control of the military and state affairs of the Liang dynasty. In late 555 and again in June 556, he repelled two large-scale invasions by the Northern Qi forces. He was successively ennobled as Duke, appointed Prime Minister, Supervisor of the Secretariat, Grand General of the Palace Guard, and later enfeoffed as Duke of Yixing and Grand Mentor. He was further promoted to Chancellor, given command over all state affairs, granted the Nine Bestowments, enfeoffed as Duke of Chen, and eventually elevated to the rank of Prince. In 557, he received the abdication from the Liang emperor and ascended the throne, establishing the Chen dynasty. In 559, Emperor Wu passed away at the age of fifty-seven, having reigned for three years. He was posthumously given the title Emperor Wu and the temple name Gaozu, and was interred at Wan'an Mausoleum. This biography traces Chen Baxian's life from his birth to his ascension to the throne, weaving together historical events into vivid and engaging narratives. Divided into fifteen chapters, it brings historical figures to life with dramatic and compelling storytelling, making it an accessible and captivating read.
