Lu You (1125-1209), courtesy name Wuguan and literary name Fangweng, was a native of Shanyin (present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province). He was a renowned patriotic poet, writer, and historian of the Southern Song dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Xiaozong, he was granted the title of Jinshi (presented scholar) and successively served as Registrar of Ningde County, Reviser of the Imperial Edicts Bureau, Vice Prefect of Longxing Prefecture, and Vice Prefect of Kuizhou Prefecture, eventually rising to the position of Acting Imperial Library Attendant before retiring from office. Throughout his life, Lu You steadfastly advocated for resistance against the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty, a stance that repeatedly incurred the opposition and persecution of the peace faction at court. Yet his determination to recover the lost territories never wavered. A prolific writer, he left behind a rich literary legacy, including the Collected Works of Weinan, Jiannan Poetry Manuscripts, and History of the Southern Tang, among others. His poetry and prose are marked by depth of thought and sincerity of feeling-at once impassioned and majestic, yet tinged with melancholy and grief; tender and restrained, yet brimming with profound emotion. With his own heroic and tragic life, Lu You sounded the most powerful voice of his era. This book begins with Lu You's birth amid turbulent times and traces his transformation from a frail scholar to a tiger-slaying hero, from a forthright minister who wept before the imperial throne to the foremost of the "Four Great Masters of the Southern Song.
