Imaginative pasts. reckons with the role of the imagination in history. It asks how acts of imagination permeate not only how we research and write about the past, but how we 'think' history. The volume explores historians' relationship to unpredictable pasts, the conditions that restrict or enable imaginative vision, and negotiations between evidence and form. Positioning the role of imagination in contrast to counterfactual histories or historical fiction, the volume centres the complex interactions between fact and imagination in historical research. This works alongside the recent 'archival turn' to present imagination as an essential bridge between the historical limitations of the archive and the stories which might be created from it. In placing the researcher at the centre of the imaginative process, chapters engage with the value of the self in the imagining of historical (im)possibilities. In doing so, they ask essential methodological questions about individual imagination in the creation of history. Imaginative pasts. reflects on the challenges and value of 'experimental histories', placing itself within older historical traditions while also signalling future directions for imaginative histories and historians.
