Beschreibung
Through the jianghu of martial arts fiction and literary imagination, this book re-examines chivalry, local life, and the awakening of consciousness in modern China. This study examines the diverse and shifting representations of "jianghu" in modern Chinese literature through the works of three Hunanese writers: Xiang Kairan (Pingjiang Buxiaosheng), Shen Congwen, and Ding Ling. Reading across the genres of martial arts fiction, native-soil literature, and revolutionary women's writing, the book traces the evolution and multiple valences of jianghu discourse. Xiang Kairan, a foundational figure in modern wuxia fiction, combines documentary precision with a fantastic vision of Hunan, where the jianghu is embedded in a hybrid space of imagination and reality, history and modernity. Shen Congwen's fragmented, elliptical narratives restore a sense of mystery to his native Xiangxi, within which jianghu narratives are subtly embedded; his engagement with jianghu operates as a form of "mirror identification," through which he both tells stories and seeks self-understanding. Ding Ling's creation of fiercely individualistic, rebellious female protagonists consistently disrupts the revolutionary discourse in her works, positioning her writing at the critical edge of political orthodoxy-an "anti-jianghu" stance that paradoxically takes the form of jianghu itself. The book ultimately demonstrates that while traditional jianghu imagination profoundly shaped the creative vision of all three writers, their respective literary commitments and modern sensibilities also revised and redefined the jianghu tradition, producing a dynamic, two-way interaction between literary form and intellectual history.
