Beschreibung
You did the work. So why is almost none of it there. You spent the weekend on it. You understood every page. Three months later, someone asks you a question about that exact material - and you produce a shape where the answer used to be. That experience is not a discipline problem. , and it is not your memory failing. It is a measurement problem. The feeling you use to judge whether an hour of study worked - the sense of the material getting smoother, more familiar, more known - is generated under conditions that will never be repeated. It is systematically optimistic. And it is the reason capable people put in years of honest effort and keep almost none of it. This book gives you fifty specific things to do about that. Each one traces to primary research. Each one comes with a small, concrete change you can make this week. And where a famous finding has failed to replicate, you'll be told. - including three widely quoted claims that fell over when researchers tried to reproduce them. What's insideThe Leaky Hour. - the ten places a study hour drains away, most of which feel like competence while they're happening. Set. - what to do in the ten minutes before you read a word. Cheap, unglamorous, and it decides more than you'd expect. Encode. - the hour itself, and the single largest mistake most people make: treating it as time for getting material in. Return. - the seven days afterwards. This holds the biggest effects in the book, and it's the part almost everyone skips because it doesn't feel like studying. Carry. - how to make what you know available in a room that looks nothing like the page you learned it on. You'll find outWhy testing yourself once beats reading something three more times. - and why the group that studied harder in one experiment ended up more confident and less able. Why splitting your flashcards into small piles quietly converts spaced practice into cramming. What actually determines whether something is still there in fifty years. - and why it isn't how often you review it. Why an AI tutor that answers your questions can leave you performing worse. than people who never had access at all. Why the methods that work will keep feeling worse than the ones you're replacing, permanently. Who this is forProfessionals reskilling into something new. People studying for certifications alongside a job. Anyone learning a language, a technical field, or a discipline they weren't trained in - and anyone who has quietly suspected that their hours are not buying what they should. You don't need a background in psychology. You need forty minutes. and a willingness to find out what your current method is actually producing. One number changes everythingNot hours logged. Not pages covered. Not how confident you feel afterwards. This book installs a single measure - what's still there a week later. - and every finding in it is aimed at moving that number. Most study advice asks you to try harder. This one asks you to check. Start with what your last study hour actually left you.
