Thirty-one of Shelley's love lyrics, from the much-quoted 'Love's Philosophy' to the long, ardent 'Epipsychidion', gathered for a pocket selection first published in 1901. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets, and among the most musical of them. Almost all the verse here belongs to the last decade of his life, before his death by drowning off the Italian coast at twenty-nine, and the poems are addressed to the women who shaped those years: his wife Mary, Emilia Viviani in Pisa, and Jane Williams. Love Poems of Shelley was issued in 1901 by John Lane of London and New York as part of the Lover's Library, a series of small volumes meant to be carried about and given away. The selection runs from short songs of a page or so - 'Song, on a Faded Violet', 'Good-night', 'To Constantia Singing' - to passages taken from Rosalind and Helen, Hellas, and Calderón's Magico Prodigioso, which Shelley translated himself.
