Beschreibung
Expanded translation of two nineteenth century memoirs recounts veterans' campaigns from 1805 to Waterloo, revealing the German volunteers' intimate, historically rigorous experiences under British service. Memoirs of German Officers in British Service is an expanded translation of two rare nineteenth century memoirs that combine veterans' recollections from the King's German Legion and the Duke of Brunswick corps, offering a vivid and uniquely intimate history of the campaigns from 1805 to Waterloo. Originally published in 1864, Erinnerungen deutscher Offiziere in britischen Diensten stands as a vital monument to the German volunteers who fought against Napoleon. Colonel Heinrich Dehnel, a veteran of the Prussian, Brunswick, British, and Hanoverian armies. dedicated his retirement to saving these stories from obscurity. He meticulously gathered diaries and recorded oral histories from fellow survivors, verifying their memories against official records to weave a narrative that is both historically rigorous and deeply personal. This new edition transforms Dehnel's compilation into a definitive resource. It now seamlessly integrates the British service chapters from Dehnel's own autobiography. Rückblicke, capturing his dramatic journey from the evacuation of the Duke of Brunswick's troops to Britain in 1809 to the final battles in 1815. Supported by extensive new biographical research, the book recovers the lost voices of German officers fighting under the British flag, ensuring their specific, hard-won experiences resonate with accuracy and force for a new generation of readers.
