Beschreibung
For those of us who grew up in Chicago during the 20th Century, especially from the 1930s through the 1980s, the experiences were often quite similar no matter which section of the city or the suburbs where you lived. We played games and sports in the streets, alleys, parks, beaches or "prairies", often each day during the four seasons, walked everywhere, travelled downtown with friends or families, attended religious institutions and either public or parochial schools, often attended colleges and universities, ate at a wide variety of neighborhood or downtown restaurants, went to movie theaters, learned to drive a car, dated, got engaged and married, had a variety of jobs, raised children, and regularly visited with families who often lived close by, and helped to take care of parents and grandparents. During the 20th Century, we learned to deal with national and international crises like world wars and the Great Depression. The key thing was that we had a lot of shared experiences, some good, some bad, but it was a century of many memories. This book, which includes almost 50 interviews with Chicagoans and over 100 black and white photographs, will help the reader remember what Chicago was like during the period from 1900 to 2000.
