You can buy a $100,000 V8 German flagship convertible for the price of a used Hyundai. But should you. When the Mercedes-Benz R129 debuted in 1989, it was the ultimate statement of Stuttgart's cost-no-object era: a flagship grand tourer embodying "The Best Or Nothing. " Designed by the legendary Bruno Sacco, it introduced the world's first automatic pop-up roll bar, structural magnesium seats with integrated seatbelts, and a 32-valve V8 with a direct bloodline to Le Mans winners. Three decades later, depreciation has made the R129 accessible to a new generation of enthusiasts. It has also sprung the ultimate affordability trap. The R129 never claimed to be a worry-free commuter car; it is a complex, analog-to-digital switchover flagship that demands curation. Neglect it, and it will punish you with a $10,000 bill for roof hydraulics or a $3,000 bill for electrical diagnostics. Understand its engineering philosophy, however, and you can savor one of the finest roadsters ever made, affordably. Written by independent repair shop owner and specialist Steve Sorensen, this is the definitive, workshop-tested manual for finding, vetting, maintaining, and preserving the 1989 to 2001 Mercedes SL-Class. Learn:. The Two Great Curses:. Identify, diagnose, and solve the R129's systemic weaknesses, from the wiring harness breakdown to the chemical certainty of hydraulic cylinder weep. The OBD2 Fallacy:. Code readers will report "No Codes Found" from the OBD2 port while hiding thousands of dollars in failing chassis electronics - unless you know the other. diagnostic port. Powertrain & Engine Defense:. Deep-dive mechanical dossiers on the M104 inline-six, Le Mans-bred M119 V8, M120 V12 Velvet Hammer, and modular M113 V8. Uncover the truth behind plastic upper timing chain guides, EZL ignition, distributor moisture, and drive-by-wire throttle. Transmission & Chassis Dynamics:. Adjust Bowden cables and vacuum modulators, prevent the pilot bushing catastrophe, and diagnose ADS suspension accumulators. The Pre-Purchase Inspection Test:. Throw the Carfax right in the trash (because it doesn't tell you anything), ask the right questions at the seller's home dealership, uncover deferred maintenance, and negotiate a fair acquisition price. Baseline Preservation:. The chemical formulations your car requires, from ZH-M hydraulic oil and HOAT phosphate-free coolants to MB 236. 14 fluids, plus fixes for brittle radiators and collapsing brake hoses. Electronics, Locks & Cabin Hydraulics:. Overcoming security lockouts, rebuilding the central locking pump, clearing EGR passages, and troubleshooting the inflatable seats. (You didn't know the R129 has inflatable seats. ). Whether you are hunting for a turn-key survivor, restoring a project, or maintaining your weekend driver, this book replaces forum guesswork with professional reality. There is no such thing as a cheap SL, but armed with the right specialist knowledge, you can get close.
