Multiple and One. is a bold and resonant reimagining of contemporary queer and trans art within a genuinely global frame. Moving across South Florida, eastern Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Alpesh Kantilal Patel weaves a richly layered narrative that brings together art history, curatorial practice, and auto-theory to illuminate the vibrant, relational worlds forged by LGBTQ artists today. Drawing on Édouard Glissant's concepts of creolisation, relationality, opacity, and the archipelago, Patel demonstrates how identities and the artworks that express them emerge not as singular or contained but through entanglement, movement, and exchange. Grounded in intimate encounters with exhibitions, collaborative workshops, and community-based practices, Multiple and One. highlights artists who respond to histories of exile, colonialism, and erasure with imagination, generosity, and collective making. From tracing queer Black Miami's nightlife to mapping transregional connections between the Caribbean and eastern Europe, and exploring Indigenous and diasporic aesthetics across the Americas and Asia, Patel shows how queer and trans creatives remake worlds through material experimentation, cross-cultural dialogue, and shared vulnerability. Rigorously argued, this book challenges the confines of traditional art history by centring embodied knowledge, curatorial thought, and lived experience, and is essential reading for those invested in global contemporary art, queer and trans studies, decolonial thought, and the transformative possibilities of relation.
