Beschreibung
In September 1887, a twenty-three-year-old woman checked into a New York boardinghouse and spent one night staring at the other residents until somebody called the police. Doctors examined her. Every one of them declared her insane. She was put on a ferry to the asylum on Blackwell's Island, where sixteen hundred women were held and nobody outside believed a word any of them said. She was a reporter. She had no notebook, no way to send a message, and no way out except a promise from an editor she'd met once. That's the story people know about Nellie Bly, along with the seventy-two days she spent racing around the world. Both happened before she turned twenty-six. The thirty-two years afterward are the ones nobody tells you about. The anarchist she interviewed in a jail cell and let speak for herself while the rest of the country was drawing her as a monster. The Brooklyn factory she ran with fifteen hundred employees and two patents in her own name. The manager who forged her signature for years until there was nothing left. The Eastern Front, which she reached at fifty, bankrupt, by talking an empire into giving her credentials. The last three years she spent finding homes for abandoned babies out of a newspaper office, sometimes keeping them in her hotel room overnight because there was nowhere else. It's also honest about where she lied, where the record simply runs out, and which famous facts about her turn out to be half true - including the ones she started herself.
