Beschreibung
This volume is written for every professional who has appeared in the prior five books of this series - the clinician who received too little information, the educator who did not know the clinical history, the guardian ad litem who did not have the school record, the caseworker who did not have the clinical report, the judge who did not have any of it. It is written for the policymaker and the legislative staff member who sets the funding formulas and writes the statutes that determine how those institutions are organized. It is written for the journalist who has sensed the shape of this story but has not had the analytical framework to name it. It is written for the child advocate who has stood at every juncture of this network and felt the machinery moving against the child she is trying to protect. And it is written for the informed general reader - the adoptive parent, the foster parent, the teacher, the neighbor - who wants to understand why the system that is supposed to protect children does not, and who deserves an honest answer to that question. The Composite Vignette Approach. As with each prior volume in this series, the case material presented in this book takes the form of composite vignettes - fictional constructions assembled from patterns observed across hundreds of clinical consultations, forensic evaluations, training engagements, and advocacy contexts spanning the combined professional experience of both authors. These composites are not real cases. They are not representations of identifiable individuals, families, or institutions. They are, however, real in the sense that matters most: every pattern they describe, every institutional failure they document, every moment of silence they record, is drawn from the authors' direct clinical and consultative observation of that pattern, that failure, that silence. The composites are designed to be recognizable to every professional in these systems - because what they describe is not exceptional. It is ordinary. That is the argument of this series, and it is the argument of this final volume above all.
