OMA’s Kunsthal in Rotterdam

Deutsch. Die 1992 eröffnete Kunsthal in Rotterdam ist ein zentraler Bau im Schaffen von Rem Koolhaas und seines Architekturbüros Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). Das Gebäude ist Teil des ebenfalls von OMA gestalteten Museumsparks, in der Nachbarschaft befinden sich das Nederlands Architectuurinstituut NAi, seit 2013 Sitz des Het Nieuwe Instituut, und das Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Die Ausstellungsfläche der Kunsthal verteilt sich auf drei grosse Hallen und zwei kleinere Galerien. Zudem beherbergt das Gebäude ein Auditorium und ein Restaurant. Diesem viel beachteten und jährlich von zahlreichen Architekturfans besuchten Museumsbau widmet der Architekt und Architekturhistoriker Tibor Pataky nun eine inspirierende Gebäudemonografie. Pataky erläutert die Vorgeschichte und den programmatischen Kontext des mehrfach angepassten Entwurfs und seiner kulturellen Bezüge, ordnet ihn ein in das Schaffen von OMA in den 1980er-Jahren und in das Umfeld der Deconstructivist Architecture. In neun Bildstrecken werden die herausragenden Qualitäten des Gebäudes und seine Einbettung in den Park auf visuell bestechende Weise dargestellt. Neu gezeichnete Pläne verdeutlichen die Schwerpunkte des Entwurfs von OMA. Opened in 1992, the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key design in the portfolio of Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the renowned firm Koolhaas cofounded in 1975. It is part of the Museumpark, a park also designed by OMA and the location of the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut NAi, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Museum of Natural History. The Kunsthal’s exhibition space is divided into three large exhibition halls and two smaller galleries. The building also houses an auditorium and a restaurant. He explains the history, the programmatic background, and the cultural references of the design, which has been adapted several times.
