Beschreibung
He was raised in an appallingly rigid Dutch Calvinist community. He went to work when he was nine as a laborer with his maternal grandfather, who was kicked by a mule at twenty-one years of age, losing his right eye and causing an extreme speech disorder. His paternal aunt took him to the library for their summer reading program at six and he became an avid reader, often staying up all night reading. As a consequence, he often missed school. He went to Calvin College in Michigan after high school and dropped out after one semester. It was just not his cup of tea. After working at a luggage factory for a couple months, he was drafted during the Vietnam War and volunteered, to avoid being idle for months. He reported to Fort Bliss, Texas for Basic Training. He was overwhelmed by the Hispanic culture and what it taught him. He bunked in the midst of several Mexican recruits. Some were citizens, some were not. AIT was totally different. He thought he was fortunate to be in an easy company. OCS was unique. He was treated like a dog but always called gentleman by his tach officers. Scout Dog School was like a breath of fresh air. He got a four-day pass as his first assignment. Vietnam had it's own uniquenesses. Many of which he thinks about constantly
