Beschreibung
Unlike the other books in the Gateway Crime series - which follow cold cases and unsolved murders - River City Reckoning. presents four St. Louis-area crimes that were solved, tried, and punished. Four cases spanning more than a century of the city's criminal history. Four verdicts. Four stories with endings. The Stagger Lee Murder (Christmas Night, 1895). A carriage driver named Lee Shelton shot a man named Billy Lyons over a Stetson hat in a North St. Louis saloon. Shelton was convicted. But the killing also became one of the most recorded songs in American history - the folk ballad "Stagger Lee," which has been recorded more than 285 times by artists from Mississippi John Hurt to Lloyd Price to Bob Dylan to Nick Cave. The Southside Dentist (1958-1980). Dr. Glennon Engleman was a south St. Louis dentist who killed for life insurance money over twenty-two years, partnering with women who wanted their husbands dead. He used rifles, sledgehammers, and dynamite. He was finally caught after a car bomb on Miami Avenue scattered body parts across two city blocks. He died in prison in 1999. The Bar Mitzvah Sniper (1977). Joseph Paul Franklin arrived in Richmond Heights, picked the Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel Congregation from the Yellow Pages, and fired into the parking lot as guests were leaving a bar mitzvah. Gerald Gordon, 42, a father of three daughters, was killed. Franklin went on to shoot Larry Flynt and Vernon Jordan, among others. He confessed to the synagogue shooting seventeen years later, from prison. Missouri executed him in 2013. The Package Killer (1990-1991). Four women were found in the St. Louis area in containers - two garbage cans, a wooden box, space between two mattresses. The cases went cold. Decades later, DNA connected them to Gary Muehlberg, who was already serving life for a 1993 murder. He pleaded guilty and received additional life sentences. River City Reckoning. is Book 7 in the Gateway Crime series.
