Beschreibung
This early work is a fascinating read for amateur and professional antiquarians, thoroughly recommended for use as a reference on shaker furniture. Forty-seven full page plates with descriptions follow a lengthy introduction on all aspects of Shaker craftsmanship. Contents Include: Preface; Shaker Chronology; Introduction - Shaker Craftsmanship, Its Cultural background; Shaker Furniture, Its Essential Character; the Craftsmen of the Sect; Shaker Houses and Shops; Conclusion; The Plates - Descriptions; Tables, Chairs and Benches; Stands; Case-Furniture; Sewing Stands; Writing-Desks; Beds and Cots; Clocks; Oval Boxes, Small Cabinetwork and Woodenware; Shop Furniture; Appendices - The Shaker Chair Industry; Notes on Benjamin and Isaac Youngs, Shaker Clockmakers; Notes on Construction, Materials and Finishes; Bibliography; and Index. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
