Research into language proficiency in essays has a long tradition. However, such studies are usually carried out on writing produced by school-age children. There has so far been a lack of research into the work of learners in the tertiary sector. This thesis contributes to the discussion of the linguistic abilities of students who are pursuing a Bachelor's degree whilst working part-time. The analysis focuses exclusively on orthographic and grammatical features; stylistic and content-related/logical aspects are discussed only in passing, as these phenomena cannot be classified as ungrammatical to the same extent. Following an introductory review of publications concerning criteria for essay marking and of academic articles on the question of what constitutes 'good German', an analysis of 100 written assignments from the years 2010-2013 is presented. Following a statistical overview, different types of features are examined and compared with currently applicable grammar rules. The paper then discusses the aspect of plausibility of individual features and explores ways of providing support for writing texts.
