Beschreibung
Based on fieldwork in Shaykh Taba, this book offers the first grammatical description of a sedentary type of Arabic from Akkar, Lebanon's northernmost province. It examines the variety's phonology, morphology, and selected semantic fields, with special focus on pausal phenomena. Identifying both retentions and innovations, the study reveals what is arguably the most intricate pausal system described for any modern Arabic dialect, and possibly within Semitic. Building on these findings, together with evidence from other Arabic dialects, it proposes a revised classification of pausal forms. The book also situates Shaykh Taba within the wider Lebanese dialect landscape through comparative analyses and engagement with Henri Fleisch's survey, filling a major gap in Levantine dialectology and offering new empirical data for Semitic linguistics.
