Beschreibung
isahistorical account written in the early 20th century. Theworkprovidesanin-depthexplorationofthear chitectural and social significance of Coventry's medieval churches and their relationship to the city's history, particularly through the lens of monastic influence and urban development. At the start of the text, Woodhouse out lines the historical context of Coventry, touching on its foundational events involving significant figures such as Earl Leofric and Countess Godiva. He discusses thecity's medievalperiod, highlightingitsroleasamarketplaceand a site of important trade and religious life. The author establishes a connec tion between the city's growth and the establishment of its monasteries, de tailing the evolution of its churches and the societal framework surrounding their construction and maintenance. The opening sets the stage for a the matic exploration of the churches that embody the cultural and historical legacy of Coventry. the first mention of this church which the indefatigable Dug dale could find was its appropriation to the priory in 1259-1260, it is tol erably certain that its foundation was much earlier. As before said, it is re puted to be older than St. Michael's and its position close to the monastery suggests that it had beenbuilt, asoftenhappened, fortheparishionersbythe monks who disliked their intrusion within the priory church. The appro priation at this time may have been rather of the nature of a confirmation of the rights of the priory than the institution of a new condition ofthings. As, in 1391, the chancel had to be rebuilt being "ruinated and decayed" we may conclude that it was probably older than the present north porch which is certainly not later than 1259. It was at the same time lengthened by twenty fourfeet, theconventgivingonehundredshillingsperannumforeightyears and six trees, the parishioners finding all other material and workmanship. The convent and parish also agreed to support and keep it in repair at their joint charges.
