Beschreibung
The Master of Business Administration was built to solve a problem that no longer exists, and it has been failing at a different problem for longer than most of its defenders admit. This book argues that the degree was never a complete education in management but the classroom half of a two-part system whose other half, the apprenticeship that firms provided as a byproduct of their staffing models, is now being dismantled by the automation of entry-level professional work. Drawing on the institutional history of business education from Wharton's founding through the Ford Foundation's reshaping of the field in 1959, on the economics of training and signaling, on the contested recent evidence about artificial intelligence and early-career employment, and on how medicine, law, architecture, and aviation actually form practitioners, it explains why fifty years of curricular reform has changed so little and why adding artificial intelligence to existing courses will change little more. The second half is constructive. It specifies what managerial capability is now scarce, in terms precise enough to teach and assess, and sets out the design of an institution built to produce it: a studio in place of the course, a three-year employment-based residency in place of the two-year degree, clinical faculty with real standing, an education in the epistemics of machine-assisted work, and a credential that some people fail to earn. Written for deans, faculty, provosts, accreditors, and anyone responsible for how a society forms the people who run its organizations, the book states its objections against itself and names the observations that would prove it wrong.
