It can also invent nonexistent court cases, misidentify ordinary objects, reproduce human prejudices, create convincing fraud, and tell a lie with the calm authority of a man who has just been elected president of the homeowners' association. The phrase artificial intelligence. encourages us to imagine an artificial brain sitting inside a computer, quietly thinking about humanity, taxes, and why people keep asking it to write resignation letters that sound "professional but slightly threatening. " That is not how most current AI works. The machine does not necessarily understand the world in the human sense. It does not awaken in the morning, stretch its circuits, pour itself a cup of electricity, and wonder what it should do with its life. Modern AI is built from mathematics, computer programs, enormous collections of examples, specialized hardware, optimization methods, and enough electrical power to make the utility company send a fruit basket. At its heart, an AI system learns patterns. Show it enough photographs labeled cat. and not cat. , and it begins recognizing visual arrangements associated with cats. Give a language model a vast amount of written material, and it learns relationships among words, sentences, subjects, styles, arguments, facts, jokes, errors, and the peculiar human habit of using seventeen paragraphs to avoid saying no.
