Beschreibung
On December 2, 1942. , a twenty three year old woman stood in a cold squash court beneath a Chicago football stadium, the only woman among forty nine scientists, and listened to a set of counters she had built with her own hands begin to click faster and faster. What she was hearing was the sound of the atomic age being born. Her name was Leona Woods. You have probably never heard of her. This is the true story that history left out of the room. Behind the men whose names fill every book about the Manhattan Project stood women whose minds shaped the physics of the bomb itself. A mathematician who calculated the implosion of the Nagasaki weapon on machines built for accounting. A physicist whose doctoral research solved a crisis that nearly shut down plutonium production at Hanford, and who was denied the Nobel Prize for an experiment that rewrote the laws of physics. A chemist told on her first day that her only job was to type, who was instead handed some of the most dangerous unexplored chemistry on earth. A woman who watched Trinity detonate from an unauthorized hillside and called it standing at the bottom of an ocean of light. They were not secretaries. They were not footnotes. They were the ones doing the math. The Women Who Built the Bomb. is the meticulously researched, ferociously told history of the women recruited into the most consequential scientific project in human history, and then erased from the story it told about itself. Drawing on declassified records, oral histories, laboratory notebooks, and the women's own words, this book restores seven extraordinary scientists, and dozens more, to their rightful place at the center of the twentieth century's defining achievement. You will meet the mathematician who supervised the calculations behind the world's first nuclear weapon before she turned twenty five. The physicist who was pregnant and hiding it from her supervisors the day the first reactor in history went critical. The chemist who fled the Nazis as a child and grew up to fight the same institutional prejudice inside the laboratory that built the bomb. The physicist who watched a colleague die of radiation poisoning and left the United States for good. This is not a story about hidden victims. It is a story about brilliant, difficult, uncompromising women who did work of staggering consequence, in a world built to make sure no one would remember their names, and who spent the rest of their lives reckoning, each in her own way, with what they had built. Read it in one sitting. You will not want to stop. Written with the narrative force of the best popular history. and the forensic rigor of primary source scholarship, this is the book that finally gives these women the reckoning, and the recognition, they earned in a squash court in Chicago more than eighty years ago.
